FWD.nl on the Audiolab 9000 Series
The Dutch press weighs in on the 9000A, 9000CDT and 9000N as a system — and hands out its Music Emotion Award.

FWD.nl reviewer Harro Tillema spent an extended period with the 9000 Series as a full stack — 9000A integrated, 9000CDT transport, 9000N network player — and came away with the site's Music Emotion Award. His framing is the one we think matters most when evaluating the series: this is Audiolab returning to the original Audiolab brief. Quality audio at a fair price, built around listening rather than spec-sheet bragging.
A warm, forgiving presentation
Tillema describes the 9000A as "silky-soft" in tonal character, with generous midrange warmth. Electric guitars sing rather than shriek; cymbals resolve with subtle detail rather than splashy brightness. It's a sound designed to hold broad musical tastes happily for an entire evening, not one that rewards only critical, seated-centre listening. The 9000CDT transport brings the same philosophy to silver disc — a composed, unhurried read of the data.
“The phonostage proved superior to digital playback via the 9000CDT — fuller, more dynamic, and especially more flowing.”

Dynamics and honest caveats
Bass is controlled, dynamics are confident, and brass sounds "full and mature" — though Tillema notes the 9000A sometimes trades a little of the knife-edge attack you get from more aggressive designs. That's a deliberate voicing choice, and he's clear that it rewards the music it was designed for. He also singles out the 9000A's built-in MM phono stage, which he felt outperformed digital playback via the 9000CDT with a Rega turntable — relaxed, finely balanced, and notably more flowing.
Our take
Two reviews now — Hi-Fi News with the 9000CDT pairing and FWD.nl with the full 9000A/CDT/N stack — have landed on the same point from different angles. The 9000 Series is not the clinical, look-at-me generation of Audiolab. It's the musical one, tuned for hours of listening rather than five-minute demos. If that's the brief you give us in the showroom, this is the system we'll walk you to first.
