In a conventional speaker system, the analogue crossover network splits the signal into frequency bands for each driver — but passive components introduce phase shifts, time smearing, and amplitude errors that blur the original recording. Exakt moves the entire crossover process into the digital domain, applying mathematically precise filters before the signal is converted to analogue at each individual drive unit. Because the signal remains lossless until the very last moment, every frequency arrives at your ears at exactly the right time. Exakt-enabled systems are also individually optimised at the factory, with each speaker's unique driver characteristics measured and compensated for, ensuring that no two units share the same generic crossover — every Exakt speaker is calibrated to its own components.

Room acoustics are the single biggest source of coloration in any hi-fi system. Standing waves, boundary reflections, and modal resonances can boost certain bass frequencies by as much as 20 dB while cancelling others entirely — problems that no amount of speaker repositioning fully solves. Space Optimisation uses a computational model of your specific room, taking into account wall materials, floor type, ceiling height, furniture, and the exact coordinates of each speaker. It then calculates precise digital filters that counteract the room's acoustic signature in real time. Unlike generic room-correction systems that rely on microphone measurements (which capture only one listening position), Space Optimisation works from first principles of acoustic physics — meaning it improves sound across the entire room, not just at a single sweet spot. Configuration is done through the Linn account system, and updates can be applied whenever furniture moves or speakers are repositioned.

The fundamental insight behind Katalyst is that a DAC chip is only as good as its supporting circuitry. Most manufacturers treat DAC implementation as a single block — Katalyst breaks it into discrete, individually optimised stages: reclocking, digital filtering, modulation, conversion, and output buffering. Each stage receives its own precision-regulated power supply with vanishingly low noise, and a dedicated master clock distribution network ensures timing accuracy across all stages. The analogue output stage uses a current-optimised architecture that maximises linearity before any signal leaves the board. Katalyst debuted in the Klimax DS and has since been incorporated across Linn's Akurate and Selekt ranges, delivering a measurably lower noise floor and a wider, more spacious soundstage compared to its predecessors.
